It has come to our attention that pupils are becoming increasingly aware of chat roulette type apps, namely Omegle and Monkey. Both these apps allow people to chat randomly with strangers which could include the sharing of pictures and/or video calls. Video’s of these apps are also being shared on Youtube. At Oakwood School we have already worked with every child to highlight the dangers of these apps. This work will continue. We would encourage all parents and carers to have a conversation with the young person you care for around the dangers of such apps. We would also encourage the checking of devices within your home to check for such apps and not allow young people to download apps without your knowledge. Our prime responsibility is for the safety and wellbeing of our pupils and other young people like them. Be Kind Online
NOS’s guide on being kind is an essential read for all parents and children using the internet. It suggests disassociating yourself from pack mentality, learning self-empathy and how to offer help online. We hope you find it useful.
